Intellectual Property (IP) Valuation

Patent and IP valuation for the Pilot Patent Valuation Support Scheme (PVSS) and financing discussions.

Discuss PVSS Valuation Needs

Preparing an IP-backed financing proposal starts with understanding the assets and the evidence behind their value. Our service focuses on the valuation work associated with PVSS, helping businesses organise patent, commercial and financial information for assessment.

MILES provides patent and intellectual property (IP) valuation support with a focus on PVSS and financing needs. We discuss your application stage, intended lender and asset scope before agreeing the valuation engagement. Licensing, transfers and commercialisation needs can also be considered.

Pilot Patent Valuation Support Scheme (PVSS)

When should you speak with us?

  • You are exploring PVSS and want to discuss the valuation preparation needed.
  • You have received a PVSS approval notification and are preparing a quotation invitation.
  • You are discussing IP-backed financing with a bank and need to clarify the valuation scope.
  • You need to assess patents alongside related IP for financing or commercialisation.

How we help

  1. Discuss the scheme and financing context

Review your application stage, proposed assets, quotation invitation and intended users. Discuss the lender’s needs and confirm the proposed valuer’s scheme eligibility and independence before engagement.

  2. Organise asset and business evidence

Review the IP records, commercial plans and forecasts you provide. Identify information gaps and any legal or technical input needed to support the analysis.

  3. Develop the quantitative assessment

Assess suitable methods and explain the main value drivers, assumptions and sensitivities. Discuss additional valuation scenarios if requested for the financing purpose.

  4. Prepare reporting deliverables

For a PVSS engagement, plan the report against the official reporting guidelines and IVS, including consideration of any HKTISC patent evaluation report provided. Coordinate the required declaration and checklist within the agreed scope.

What information is typically required?

  • Company background and current PVSS application stage
  • Patent grant, examination and maintenance records, and the wider IP asset list
  • Ownership, licence and assignment agreements, and relevant restrictions or encumbrances
  • Historical financials, forecasts and evidence of commercial use
  • Financing objectives, intended report users and lender requirements
  • PVSS notices, quotation invitation, grant letter and HKTISC report, where available

The information request will be tailored to the purpose and scope. If your records are incomplete, we can first discuss preparation priorities.

Frequently asked questions

Does the valuation guarantee funding or a bank loan?

No. Scheme approval and reimbursement remain subject to the relevant requirements and decisions. A lender assesses the financing proposal independently; a valuation is a reference for that assessment.

Can the scope include IP beyond patents?

Yes. Under PVSS, the valuation must include at least one granted patent owned by the approved entity and identified in Part C or D of its application. Other IP assets can also be included in the approved scope.

How should we choose a PVSS valuer?

Use the official designated-provider lists and confirm the individual valuer’s eligibility and independence. We can discuss the proposed valuer and engagement documents with you before the scope is agreed.
